Offering Support

You will be able to offer support in a number of roles;

Mentor

The role of the Mentor is to guide an employee through their career by providing off-line support and guidance with the overall objective of helping that individual make significant progress in their knowledge, work and thinking. The mentor should not be their line manager or direct supervisor nor do they need to be a registered engineer, someone more senior or even in the same industry. Importantly, the relationship should be one of confidentiality.

Assessor

Can assess a candidate’s particular activity. Could be a supervisor, line manager, project manager or course tutor. Should be familiar with the employee’s work and may also be responsible for making formal company appraisals of that employee.

The Assessor will be best placed to sign off any evidence in support of an employee’s professional development.

Sponsor

A Sponsor is required for those employees seeking EC(UK) registration, with the responsibility of signing off the qualifying report in support of the application. Could be a senior manager or director with line responsibility for the employee and able to commit resources to support their development.

The importance of professional development and how it is carried out is the same for all employees regardless of at what stage their career is at. For those working at the graduate stage towards professional registration the above actions need to be more defined as it is evidence of such initial professional development that will contribute to their successful registration.
