Accredited Training and Development Schemes

For employers who need to recruit, develop and retain technical teams and demonstrate international standards of competence, productivity and professionalism, an Accredited professional development scheme is essential.

What is an accredited scheme?

This is a quality assured pathway for graduates and apprentices who wish to work towards professional registration. The high standard achieved is the result of a partnership between the company, the employee and the professional registration bodies.

A scheme provides structured learning during the formative stages of a professional career using current best practices and support. Individual candidates build a targeted profile of competence, quickly enabling them to become highly productive employees as well as professionally recognised as soon as possible.

Accreditation indicates to:

  • Potential recruits, that they will be given the best opportunity available for achieving professional status and career development.
  • Existing employees, that there is good reason to stay committed and maintain their development with the organisation over a significant timescale.
  • Managers, that the technical team will be able to sustain and improve its capability and performance over time.
  • Human Resources staff, that the processes and content of the scheme compare positively with similar interventions for technical staff in other organisations.
  • Clients, customers and other interested parties, that the organisation’s employees are trained to professional and exacting standards of competence.

Employers with Accredited Schemes benefit from better recruitment, retention, motivation and development of talent within their teams.

Accreditation through the Professional Development Partnership

The five partners of the Professional Development Partnership (IoP, IIE, IEE, RAeS and IMechE) are licensed by the Engineering Council to Accredit qualifications and company professional development schemes.

The partners are also Nominated Bodies of the Engineering Council, allowing them to register appropriately qualified members in the categories mentioned below.

Who to contact?

Many employers recruit and develop staff in a multitude of disciplines, covered by different professional bodies. You may choose to have your scheme accredited by one or more bodies. The bodies of the Professional Development Partnership have developed a unified approach to enable employers to provide a single scheme which meets the requirements for their disciplines. You may apply to any using the combined form provided below, and a joint accreditation visit may be arranged.

The Institution of Engineering and Technology
Schemes for Electrical, Electronic, Information, Manufacturing and Production engineers working towards professional registration as Engineering Technician (EngTech), Incorporated Engineer (IEng) or Chartered Engineer (CEng)

Institution of Mechanical Engineers
Schemes for Mechanical Engineers working towards CEng

Institute of Physics
Schemes for Scientists and Physicists working towards Chartered Physicist (CPhys), CEng or Chartered Scientist (CSci).

Royal Aeronautical Society
